Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: VF+

Jagiellonians, Sigismund I the Old (1506-1548), half-penny without date, mint Kraków.

Variety with a large crown and eagle strongly overlapping the inner surrounds

Obverse: ✠MONETA:SIGISMVNDI

Reverse: ✠REGIS:POLONIE

Diameter 18.3 mm Weight 0.92 g

The coin has a very good presentation in spite of a slight scarcity. Half-pennies without a date were most likely minted for Sigismund the Old for the purpose of waging war against the Teutonic Order. There are two basic types of such half-pennies, with REX and REGIS in the reverse legend.

Literature: Kopicki 405 (R1)
