Vasa family, Sigismund III Vasa (1587-1632), 1597 grosz, Poznań, R-EGNI, rare
Crown penny minted in Poznań for Sigismund III Vasa, variety with split inscription R-EGNI, end of inscription POL. and abbreviated date under the Eagle and Pogo on the reverse.
The manager of the Poznan Mint, Herman Rüdiger, begins minting this rarer denomination - the penny - in 1597, and this is the third mint to mint this denomination after Bydgoszcz and Wschowa. Unfortunately, only for one year. The Poznań penny is characterized by a smaller portrait of the king and the fact that a flower was placed on the reverse, as well as two shields of arms (with Lewart - the coat of arms of the Grand Treasurer of the Crown Jan Firlej and Rose) dividing the legend of the reverse, in this piece only the letter R was struck between them.
Silver, weight 1.58 grams, diameter 21 mm
